Questions often asked about hypnotherapy

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the use of deep rest states for therapeutic purposes – it’s a safe, simple and drug-free technique to help people make changes.

How does it work?

We use hypnosis in therapy because it’s a natural learning process – hypnosis allows access to the unconscious mind where fundamental emotional and behavioural changes take place.

What does the hypnotherapist do?

My focus is on clarifying what clients want to change, helping them to set manageable goals for change, and then making sure those changes happen as quickly as possible. As part of this process, I encourage my clients to recognise their emotional patterns, to look at them in different ways and, using a variety of techniques including Deep Relaxation, NLP and CBT, I help them change those patterns.

Will I lose control?

Not at all. You will be completly conscious and aware, just deeply relaxed. Most of us are already familiar with deep rest states as they often occur naturally - for example when we dream at night or day dream, when we listen to some wonderful music, read a book, watch a film or listen to a story.

You might like to look at some stories & testimonials from my clients. These often show just how quickly early concerns disappear and they also provide valuable insights into what it's actually like to experience a hypnotherapy session. One of my personal favourites is "I arrived in tears and left laughing!"

What situations can it help?

  • Addictions such as smoking, eating, drinking, drugs, work, gambling, etc.
  • general fears & anxieties
  • emotional eating
  • panic attacks
  • phobias
  • depression
  • trauma / PTSD
  • chronic pain (e.g., long-term illness)
  • acute pain (e.g., @ the dentist/hospital)
  • sleeping difficulties
  • anger
  • stress
  • OCD & IBS
  • fear of flying
  • lack of self-confidence
  • poor concentration
  • speaking in public
  • performance anxieties
  • relationship difficulties
  • workplace strife
  • increasing fertility, easing pregnancy & childbirth

How will I benefit?

  • feel more self-confident & energetic
  • regain your natural ability to sleep well
  • reduce conflict, stress, anger, resentment and fear of rejection
  • improve your concentration, overcome procrastination and make better decisions
  • learn to relax easily, promoting better health and well-being
  • develop and sustain relationships more easily
  • increase your memory, creativity and emotional intelligence
  • achieve a healthier work<>life balance

Who uses hypnotherapy?

Over the years, I've helped people from all walks of life experience the benefits of hypnotherapy:

  • Teachers & students, doctors & nurses, singers & musicians, designers & illustrators ...

  • Train drivers & bus drivers, therapists & counsellors, HRs & PRs, barbers & baristas ...

  • Builders & architects, coaches & athletes, rangers & wardens, bankers & brokers ...

  • Smokers & breathers, parents & carers, writers & readers ...

  • People who knew what they wanted & people who didn't ...

  • People who wanted their lives back & others who were just lost for words.

Perhaps it's time for you to see where you fit in.

How long will the treatment take?

I practice a solution-focused hypnotherapy which means that we establish a timeframe from the start and work towards resolving situations as quickly as possible – sometimes in a single session. On average though, most situations need around 3-6 sessions to resolve themselves; for smokers it's 2 sessions plus a booster. Above all, our emphasis is on creating beneficial change rather than endlessly discussing old habits or past mistakes.

Is it complicated?

Not at all. I believe that people are the experts in their own lives, fundamentally aware of what they need, and that therapists are experts at managing change. Working together, we’re able to identify changes the individual client wants and, drawing on the client’s own resources and experiences, make those beneficial changes happen.

The whole purpose of hypnotherapy is to put people back in control of their own emotions & behaviour.
